She had stopped breathing.
Although Bai Qianye and Zi Yin poured all their internal energy into Qi Lin, they still couldn't prevent her body from gradually cooling down. In the end, when Zi Yin withdrew his internal energy, beads of sweat rolled down his face, soaking his clothes. However, Bai Qianye continued to struggle without any signs of stopping.
But in Zi Yin's view, Bai Qianye was merely throwing himself into a hopeless situation.
"That's enough, she is already dead." He grabbed Bai Qianye’s hand and pulled him away. Unexpectedly, Bai Qianye rolled down from the bed in such a pitiful state, having been so consumed by his efforts. Zi Yin put Qi Lin down properly before walking to Bai Qianye and said, "Give up. Don't continue any longer."
Bai Qianye shook his head, struggled to get up, but because of overexertion, he couldn’t manage it; this was the first time he felt so defeated.
"Enough! Haven't you seen that she has stopped breathing and is already dead" Zi Yin shouted angrily. "Bai Qianye, you are human, not a god. You can't bring someone back to life. She should have died three years ago."
"Even if it means defying the heavens, I will make her live," Bai Qianye glared coldly at Zi Yin and pushed him away as he stood up and walked to the bedside, continuing, "Her life belongs to me; I won't let her die. She can’t die."
Zi Yin was boiling with anger right now, rushing forward and grabbing Bai Qianye’s clothes, his eyes turning red in fury, but the determined glint in Bai Qianye's cold black pupils stopped him from blaming him.
"Do you believe that I could knock you out and bury her right now" Zi Yin had to lower his voice, gritting his teeth as he spoke with a firm tone.
Bai Qianye smiled and said, "Then you’d better make sure I never wake up again. Otherwise, even if you bury her, I will dig her out and keep her by my side for life."
Zi Yin looked at Bai Qianye in amazement, huffed, then picked up Bu Yao and turned to leave.
Bai Qianye held Qi Lin close and whispered softly, "Every time I hold you like this before, you’d unconsciously push me away. But this time, you are so obedient and let me hold you. Don’t you fear what I might do"
But the person in his arms kept their eyes closed tightly without responding to him.
"However, it’s my first time holding you like this and yet I can't feel your presence," Bai Qianye tightened his grip again as if he wanted to meld Qi Lin into himself. But then he remembered that such force might hurt her, so he loosened his hold slightly.
Afterward, the room fell silent for a while. The crackling of the candlelight only highlighted the awkwardness. Eventually, it couldn’t withstand the wind blowing in from outside and went out with a puff.
When Mu Qingfeng entered, he thought there was no one in the room. If it weren't for his superior senses in darkness compared to ordinary people, he wouldn't have been able to find Bai Qianye.
"Why are you in such a state"
Bai Qianye didn’t even raise his head; he continued holding Qi Lin. He had maintained this posture for nearly two hours, and the body of Qi Lin in his arms was starting to stiffen. However, Bai Qianye persisted in rubbing her arms back and forth continuously, trying to prevent her from stiffening.
In just these few hours, it seemed like years had passed. Mu Qingfeng nearly thought that something wrong wasn’t with Qi Lin but instead with Bai Qianye.
"How is she" After asking and not receiving an answer from Bai Qianye, and seeing his lack of intention to respond, Mu Qingfeng helplessly shook his head and prepared to reach out to check Qi Lin’s breath. However, before he could do so, he was grabbed by Bai Qianye.
Mu Qingfeng was stunned; at this moment, Bai Qianye looked like a starving wolf staring hungrily at him. As soon as Mu Qingfeng approached Qi Lin, Bai Qianye would charge over recklessly.
"I’m asking you, do you want her to come back to life" Mu Qingfeng said seriously, "If not, listen to me."
A flicker of light appeared in Bai Qianye’s eyes before he released his grip on Mu Qingfeng and asked, "How confident are you"
"I don’t know, but we should at least try." Mu Qingfeng took out the brocade box and said, “This is given to me by your senior brother, Fusu.”
“What is this” Upon receiving the box, a familiar sweet fragrance hit his nostrils. This scent was exactly like Qi Lin’s. Bai Qianye could only identify around sixty or seventy types of medicinal herbs within it. But now he couldn’t care about that; he removed the wax coating and forcefully opened Qi Lin's mouth to put in the medicine.
However, Qi Lin wouldn't swallow at all; putting the medicine in was futile. Finally, he had no choice but to take out the medicine to melt it into water and try to pour it down her throat. But before he could do so, the pill was snatched away from him.
"Humph, you are clever all your life; how come you’re acting so foolish now" Mu Qingfeng was also surprised by Bai Qianye’s behavior, noticing that his internal energy was less than 20%. It wasn’t surprising he looked disheveled. He then continued, “Fusu said this can only enter the body of a normal person via warmth. But she doesn't have any warmth now; there has to be someone who helps her."
"Do I need to explain" Bai Qianye coldly said, "What are you waiting for"
“Given your current state, do you think you can pass the medicine to Qi Lin before it enters your body” Mu Qingfeng seriously asked, “If the timing is off, she will really be dead.”
Bai Qianye was stunned. Looking at Qi Lin's tranquil face, he said, "I know what I have to do now; you come here."
This time around, there was no way for him to bet his chances again.
Mu Qingfeng walked over and sat facing Qi Lin with his legs crossed. He placed the medicine in his mouth, used his internal energy to fix the pills together, and tried hard not to waste any of them. After the pills turned completely into gas, Mu Qingfeng lifted Qi Lin's chin.
Bai Qianye stood by quietly watching. Although he had already sworn that no one else would touch Qi Lin again, this time, in order to save her, there was no choice but to let it happen.
When Mu Qingfeng transmitted all the medicine to Qi Lin, his internal energy was almost depleted. A fine layer of sweat appeared on his forehead. He handed Qi Lin over to Bai Qianye and stood up to move aside.
"Whether or not it works depends on her fate. If she hasn’t improved by the time the sun rises tomorrow morning, you should let her rest in peace," Mu Qingfeng said after taking a breath to calm his breathing. "If she wakes up, find a way to tell me."
"Thank you." Bai Qianye replied softly.
Mu Qingfeng was slightly stunned. Normally, one wouldn't hold onto a corpse for longer than an incense stick before giving up, yet Bai Qianye had held Qi Lin for two hours and immediately wanted to give her the medicine when he got it, without even asking any questions. Fortunately, the condition of taking this medicine was that she had to die once.
"Hahaha, I do what I want," Mu Qingfeng said with a laugh before leaving.
For the next two or three hours, Bai Qianye didn't move from Qi Lin's side, not taking his eyes off her. It wasn't until the sun slowly rose the next morning that he moved and stretched his stiff neck.
He reached out to feel Qi Lin's breath but there was no change. He frowned slightly, deciding to wait a little longer.
But when the sunlight shone through the window, Qi Lin still wasn't breathing; her body remained as rigid as stone.
Bai Qianye became increasingly restless and prepared to transmit his internal energy into Qi Lin again. But when he touched her, he noticed that where she was hit by the sun's rays had turned slightly red. Bai Qianye suddenly had an idea and carried Qi Lin quickly out into the sunlight.
Qi Lin basked in the sunlight. At first, there were no changes to her body, but after an incense stick passed, her body began to slowly turn red until she looked like a small red person as if touching her would make her turn into a puddle of blood.
The phenomenon lasted for an entire incense stick before the redness faded, though Qi Lin's blue veins were now clearly visible and quite terrifying. Bai Qianye stared intently at Qi Lin; even here he could see traces of blood rapidly flowing in her veins. This phenomenon continued for nearly an incense stick before the movement in Qi Lin’s veins finally calmed down.
A while later, large drops of sweat began to pour out of every pore on Qi Lin's body. In no time at all, her clothes were soaked through and the sweat was murky with a foul smell. When the sweating stopped, Qi Lin started coughing up blood, and what came out was black clots that looked very terrifying.
Despite this, Bai Qianye didn't approach Qi Lin any closer. It wasn’t until she had coughed up nearly a bowl of blood clots that she finally stopped bleeding. A sweet fragrance began to emanate from Qi Lin's body, covering the earlier foul smell, and many birds flew down to sing around Qingquan Hall.
Bai Qianye thought it was probably time, so he moved closer to her. Now Qi Lin’s thin face had a hint of redness; her chest rose and fell slowly in a steady rhythm as Bai Qianye felt her pulse.
After feeling Qi Lin's steady pulse, Bai Qianye finally returned to his usual smile.
Awaited until Qi Lin had calmed down and everything returned to normal. Then Bai Qianye led her to a bathhouse for cleaning. By the side of the bathhouse were several maids holding change-of-clothes but not looking up, their faces red with blushing. It was the first time they had seen someone so prestigious washing a woman.
After he cleaned Qi Lin, Bai Qianye did not let her rest in bed but brought her out to bask under the sun. The maids placed beside them all the prepared face powder and hair decorations. Then Bai Qianye began to carefully comb Qi Lin's hair and apply makeup.
When Ziyin came, Bai Qianye was drawing Qi Lin’s eyebrows. He walked up and teased, "Tsk tsk tsk, if she knew about this, her skin would probably crawl. Look, look, the floor is full of my goosebumps."
Bai Qianye just gave a slight smile but continued to carefully draw Qi Lin’s eyebrows. Only after he finished did he slowly say, "Did you bring what I asked for"
"Hey Aie, I am the emperor here. Why do you treat me like a eunuch or maid" Ziyin waved his hand and brought over the best ginseng soup, saying, "This is the palace’s finest ginseng. After buying it from Mu Qingfeng last time, I hesitated to use it. It cost me many silver coins. That merchant is such a swindler."
Although he said all of this, Bai Qianye merely focused on blowing cold the ginseng soup and testing its temperature before carefully giving Qi Lin some. When some spilled out, he even meticulously wiped them for her without listening to Ziyin’s blabbering.
"Why hasn’t she woken up yet" Ziyin could only change the topic towards Qi Lin. As expected, Bai Qianye finally gave him a glance.
“Although the poison has been expelled from her body, but having slept for three years and also experienced death before, how can it be so easy to wake up” Bai Qianye explained, “She will wake in some days. However, if anyone approaches her again, I won't show any mercy.”
Ziyin gave a slight smile as he looked at Qi Lin. Perhaps only Qi Lin could make Bai Qianye so anxious and helpless.
More than ten days later, although Qi Lin's complexion improved, she still showed no signs of waking up, leaving Bai Qianye clueless.
When the Empress Dowager appeared at Qin Quan軒 again to see Qi Lin, Bai Qianye was brewing tea. A faint fragrance of tea and a soothing sweet scent were wafting through Qin Quan軒.
"I heard that she hasn't woken up yet. That's why I came to take a look." When the Empress Dowager said this, Bai Qianye did not raise his eyes to look at her. She didn’t mind and walked over again, saying, "Have you considered the possibility that she might have chosen not to wake"
Bai Qianye was taken aback and raised his eyes to look at the Empress Dowager, asking, “What do you mean by this”
"A woman who has been deeply hurt by someone she loves will lose hope. When a person's heart is dead, they have no attachments left. Perhaps that is why she died for you but does not wish to wake up for you.", I cannot be at his side constantly; therefore, I will take the initiative to protect him for now. If anything happens to the prince, I would be unable to bear responsibility either. Don’t lose me.""...
